Here at AngelCentral, our Partners meet and assess a variety of startups across the Southeast Asian region, close to 300 a year. One of the key insights we have gathered was that the number of deep technology startups have been increasing over the years. Some of these technologies include Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Biomedical/Medical sciences, cybersecurity, and the like.
At the same time, the amount of support for deep tech startups have been increasing as well. This can be seen through both SGInnovate’s and Enterprise Singapore’s commitments to support and co-invest in deep technology startups. Also, a key focus of the National Research Foundation’s (NRF) S$19B Research and Enterprise 2020 (RIE2020) plan would be on deep technologies such as advanced manufacturing & engineering and health & biomedical sciences. It has never been a more opportune time to be a founder of a deep tech startup.
Or to be an investor in the space as well.
As part of our efforts to promote, grow and add value to our angel investing community in Southeast Asia, I am delighted to share that together with SGInnovate, we will be hosting our second edition of our Learning from Experienced Angel Series, titled “Investing in Deep Tech Startups: Why, How and Where?”
In this sharing, we have invited 4 highly experienced guests to share via a panel discussion. They are:
Mr Pang Heng Soon, Head, Venture Building, SGInnovate. Heng Soon brings with him 30 years of in-depth knowledge and experience in technology startups investments. At SGInnovate, he leads the Venture Building team that is focused on launching new startups that have research and intellectual property at their core.
Dr Prem Pillay, Medical Director, Singapore Spine Brain Nerve Center. Dr Prem is a senior specialist neurosurgeon in Singapore who previously was at the Cleveland Clinic USA. He specialises in treating spine and brain injuries with cutting-edge medical technology.
Mr Chirayu Wadke, Partner of Seedplus. Chirayu is an experienced technology executive, working on IOT and mobile payments platforms at Google, Mountain View for the last 5 years.
Mr Lim Kuo-Yi, Managing Partner of Monk’s Hill Ventures. He used to be the CEO of Infocomm Investments, a $200M venture fund based in Singapore investing in technology startups globally.
The panel will be moderated by AngelCentral’s Partner Lim Der Shing, who together with his wife Shao Ning, have invested in >30 startup companies and venture capital funds over the past 5 years.
Some of the questions will include having the panellists share about their personal experiences in Southeast Asia, insights they have gathered over the years, and advice for angels who wish to explore investing in deep tech companies.
